What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a neurobiological therapy developed by Dr. David Grand that helps access the brain’s natural ability to heal itself. It is based in neuroscience, mindfulness, and trauma research. It works by identifying and processing the areas of the brain where unprocessed experiences are stored, which is often beyond words or conscious awareness.
During a Brainspotting session, the therapist helps you identify a specific eye position—called a brainspot—that connects to an emotional or physical experience stored in the brain. By gently focusing on this spot while staying attuned to your internal experience, the brain can process and release unresolved trauma, stress, or emotional pain.
How can Brainspotting help me?
Brainspotting can be effective for a wide range of emotional and psychological concerns, including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety and panic
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Chronic stress
- Emotional overwhelm
- Performance blocks
- Negative self-beliefs
- Physical symptoms connected to stress or trauma
Many clients report:
- Reduced emotional intensity
- Greater sense of calm and regulation
- Increased self-awareness
- Improved emotional resilience
- Faster progress compared to talk therapy alone
Because Brainspotting works with the nervous system, clients often experience changes even when issues have felt long-standing or resistant to other approaches.
What can I expect during a Brainspotting session?
A Brainspotting session is collaborative and gentle. You remain fully present and in control throughout the process, and you are not hypnotized or in any kind of trance. Through a short discussion, the therapist helps locate the brainspot by viewing eye positions when the client is discussing the trauma they wish to work on. Focusing on this point starts the emotional processing. No experience is needed.
